High-chrome cast vs forged grinding balls
"Cast or forged?" is one of the most common questions buyers ask. Both make excellent grinding balls — they just win in different duties. Here is how the two compare on the factors that matter.
How they are made
Cast high-chrome balls are poured and solidified in moulds, producing a microstructure rich in hard chromium carbides. Forged balls are hot-formed from steel bar and through-hardened, giving a tough, uniform structure with no casting porosity.

So which one?
- Choose high-chrome cast for fine grinding and highly abrasive ores where wear dominates.
- Choose forged for large-diameter and SAG mills where impact and breakage are the risk.
- Many plants run both — forged in the coarse chamber, high-chrome in the fine chamber.
