Mill liner profiles: wave, step & classifying
Mill liners do two jobs at once: they protect the shell from wear, and their profile lifts and cascades the charge to control grinding action. Profile choice has a direct effect on throughput, energy and liner life.
Common shell-liner profiles
- Wave: smooth, undulating profile for fine grinding chambers; gentle lift, low impact.
- Step / lifter: raised bars that throw the charge for impact grinding; used in coarse and primary mills.
- Classifying: profile that segregates media by size along the mill, keeping larger balls where they grind best.

Material matters too
Liners are supplied in high-chrome and Cr-Mo cast, and sometimes rubber or composite for fine wet milling. The right material depends on impact level and abrasiveness.
